Safety and Risk Management

Health and Safety

Environmental Health and Safety is an integral part of risk management at Solidaire, responsible for oversight and implementation of the company’s health and safety programs. Our history has demonstrated that the more aligned our local business units, subcontractors and partners are with our safety ideal of loss avoidance, the safer and more successful the project outcome. The Environmental Health and Safety Department is an integral component of risk management at Solidaire and is responsible for oversight and implementation of all aspects of the company’s health and safety programs and policies.

We continually evaluate our operations and controls and strive to make our organization the best in the industry. The Safety Organization is structured to operate under one umbrella providing a strategic link and support function between Corporate Risk Management and Solidaire's local business units to assure that the risk management safety priorities are providing impact through an engaged approach.

Risk Management

Our Risk Management Department offers a centralized and innovative approach to risk management. Comprised of staff in environmental health and safety, site insurance, legal, finance, and information technology, this group drives risk management strategies for the company. In addition, the department acts as a resource, partner and advisor to all the business units while ensuring the development of successful and innovative programs. Such programs provide the controls to mitigate losses while also fully integrating risk management into the daily operations of the entity. The Company continually strives to improve communication and cultivate collaboration between risk management disciplines and the business units with the expectation of improving our ability to more successfully manage our risks.

We at Solidaire are committed to a “safety first” philosophy. The department, in coordination with a staff of more than 20 people dedicated to safety, has developed a comprehensive safety program consisting of four guiding elements as Building L.I.F.E.® (Living Injury Free Everyday) principles;

  1. Injuries are Preventable
  2. Perform a Job Only if it is Safe
  3. Working Safely is a Condition of Employment
  4. Practice and Expect Safe Behavior Everywhere, Everyday

Environmental Management

Increasingly stringent legislation, the development of economic policies and other measures to foster environmental protection, and a general growth of concern from clients about environmental matters that include sustainable development.

Solidaire Construction (Pty) Ltd. is committed to achieve and demonstrate sound environmental performance by controlling the impact of their activities or services on the environment, taking into account their environmental policy and objectives. Our success is as a result of commitment from all levels and functions, especially from top management.

Skills Development

Solidaire Construction was formed in 1994 with the intention of creating work opportunities for the owners who were still studying to join the company when complete their studies and also to take advantage of the government preferential procurement policies that were made to empower companies that are owned by previously disadvantaged individuals to access lucrative government construction contracts that were previously dominated by few big white owned companies.

It is our company intention to grow and also look for job opportunities outside the public sector and also to mentor and forge strategic working relationships with other companies in the construction sector that are owned by young people. Our skills development programmes are designed to help young business owners and previously disadvantaged individuals to obtain the necessary skills and expertise to be able to compete effectively in the construction industry as well as to contribute positively to this country’s economy, reduce poverty and create job opportunities.

Quality Control

Solidaire Construction has been involved in the Construction Industry for a number of years. Our specific field of expertise has been that of Quality Control Management and Project Process Management. We believe that a process of quality management control that filters every phase of the construction process will ensure that the delivery of construction projects will be fast tracked.

Staff Representative:Handles representing members fairly and effectively in relation to matters arising within the organisation which concern employment and conditions of employment.
